Embracing the Farm Life: A Journey from Legacy to Innovation

In the heart of the countryside, where the legacy of equine excellence courses through my veins, I stand as the fourth generation in a lineage of equestrians. My childhood was framed by the majestic silhouettes of mules against the mountainous backdrop, with my grandfathers leading the way, and I, their little 'Buckeret,' in tow. One of my most cherished memories is of my grandfather, a figure redolent of cigarettes and raisins, lifting me onto the saddle of his beloved mule, Peaches. In that moment, nestled on the back of a mule, I found my haven.

Fast forward four decades, and the torch has been passed to me. I am the sole grandchild who has taken up the mantle of farming, a testament to a love for the land and its creatures that was sown deep within me from those early rides. My husband often reminds me, "It's a 10-year project." But for us, it's not just a project; it's our life at Happy Horse Apple Farm. Here, amidst the daily challenges and the relentless cycle of seasons, we've learned to abide by a few golden rules that keep our spirits high and our resolve unbreakable.

Always Return to Laughter

Farming, much like life, is an unpredictable journey filled with its fair share of ups and downs. At our farm, we've cultivated a culture where laughter is our compass. This ethos, "Always Return to Laughter," serves as a reminder that joy is a choice, especially in the face of adversity. It's about embracing the chaos, finding humor in the mishaps, and facing each day with a smile. After all, love for problem-solving, getting your hands dirty, and tackling the unforeseen with grace are the hallmarks of a true farmer.

Buckets Be Thrown

In the world of farming, no amount of planning can prepare you for everything. Unexpected challenges are part of the package, and we've learned to deal with frustration in a unique way - by throwing buckets. Yes, you heard that right. We keep a stack of buckets on hand, not for carrying water or feed, but for those moments when you just need to let out some steam. It's a harmless way to vent, ensuring that anger is directed at inanimate objects rather than each other. A quirky, yet effective, strategy for maintaining harmony.

It Takes a Village

The old adage "it takes a village" holds profound truth in the context of farming. A recent Harvard study echoed this sentiment, highlighting the paramount importance of relationships in our lives. True friends are the ones who show up when you're knee-deep in chores, overwhelmed and in dire need of an extra pair of hands. Our farm thrives on this communal spirit, where help is given freely and with joy, reinforcing the bonds that make our endeavors possible.

Make Shit Shine

With horses as part of our family, managing manure is a daily chore. What might seem like a Sisyphean task to some has become a source of innovation for us. My husband and his friends have turned this challenge into an opportunity by starting an organic composting business. This initiative not only provided us with a clever name for our farm but also transformed a potential nuisance into a valuable resource. Making shit shine, quite literally, has taught us that with a bit of creativity, even the most mundane tasks can be turned into gold.

A New Chapter in Communal Living

As we venture into the realm of starting a farm and creating a communal living space, it's clear that this path is more than a choice; it's a calling. Drawing from the well of personal history and the lessons learned on this land, we're setting the stage for a life that's deeply connected to the earth, our community, and each other.

Our journey is a testament to the transformative power of returning to our roots, while also pushing the boundaries of traditional farming. It's a delicate balance between honoring the legacy of those who came before us and embracing the innovations that allow us to sustain this way of life for generations to come.

The path is not without its hurdles, but with resilience, a sense of humor, and a community that stands together, we're writing a new chapter in the story of Happy Horse Apple Farm. A chapter where sustainability, personal growth, and collective responsibility pave the way for a future where we not only survive but thrive.

Embarking on this venture is a testament to the enduring spirit of those who find solace in the rhythm of the countryside, the ones who know that true fulfillment comes from the land, the community, and the legacy we choose to create. Here's to the next 10 years and beyond, as we continue to cultivate a life filled with laughter, innovation, and the unbreakable bonds of friendship and family.
